Summer Rains is the debut EP from producer, beat-smith, and multi-instrumentalist Finn Irregular. Originally from North London, moving to Australia in 2014 saw Finn find a creative home within the vibrant city of Melbourne, (Naarm). In addition to teaching the next generation of young musicians guitar, keys and drums, Finn is a founding member of Messy Mammals (w/ Asha Trips), taking influence from across the spectrums of jazz, hip-hop, broken beat, and R’n’B.
With a fresh and modern production style - analogue synths, drum machines and live instrumentation are all employed to create an EP rich in texture, united by the theme of positive summer vibrations. As a collaborative effort, Melbourne’s slickest artists including, Rara Zulu, Cazeaux O.S.L.O., Matthew Hayes, CD and Hayku Kyah, all add their unique touch to Finn’s distinctive productions.
Title track ‘Summer Rains’ is formed of two sections – day & night. After the unmistakable introduction, good friend and collaborator, Rara Zulu effortlessly showcases her expressive but soothing vocals with a cheerfully wistful throwback to remembering the summer rains. Transitioning to ‘night’ Cazeaux O.S.L.O (So.Crates) executes his trademark poetic flow, teleporting you under the stars to the scene of a late night beach jam. The track incudes Finn’s longtime, creative partner Asha Trips on synth bass.
Following in coherent succession, ‘Waves’ is a downtempo instrumental house track with a feel very much like its name. A constant ebb and flow of arpeggiated synths and lush pads capture, and turn you within the ocean swell. Matthew Hayes (Z.F.E.X, 30/70) provides the purposeful and melodic bass line making the track punchy and ambient, dreamy and immersive.
‘Stationed in the Sky’ blends the work of an analog drum machine with deep bass and jazzy chords. Anchored by a sweet-yet-powerful rap from Haku Kyah, it segues into a chorus that lifts into a cascading symphony of lush vocals by CD. Evoking Studio Ghibli-esque colourful scenes, it neatly demonstrates another side to Finn’s diverse and unique production style.
Rounding off the EP is ‘Find A Way’. Featuring the calming vocals of Rara Zulu, bass and synth credits go to Melbourne muso’s Jesse Chin-Quan and Angus Gray. An exuberant commingle of neo-soul and R’n’B, it maintains a vibrant sense of nostalgia woven throughout via Finn’s contained production and Rara’s catchy vocals and stylized delivery.
